860-347-8457Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is an important step in the management of early periodontal disease. The process removes calculus or tartar from your teeth.
What is Scaling and Root Planing?
Often referred to as a "deep cleaning," scaling and root planing is a non-surgical procedure used to treat gum disease. It involves two main steps:
- Scaling: Removal of plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces and below the gum line
- Root Planing: Smoothing of the root surfaces to help gums reattach to the teeth
Does It Hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. You may experience some sensitivity afterward, but most patients find the procedure tolerable. Any discomfort typically subsides within a few days.
How Long Does It Take?
The length of the procedure depends on the extent of the disease. Typically, scaling and root planing is performed in one to two visits, with each visit lasting about one to two hours. Sometimes, the mouth is divided into quadrants and treated over multiple appointments.
How Often Do You Need It?
The frequency depends on your individual condition. After initial treatment, many patients transition to a periodontal maintenance program to keep their gum disease under control. Your periodontist will recommend a schedule based on your needs.
What to Expect After Treatment
After scaling and root planing, your gums may be tender and slightly swollen. You should avoid eating until the numbness wears off. Follow your periodontist's instructions for home care to promote healing and prevent recurrence of gum disease.
