Patient Instructions

Guidelines for before and after your procedures

Following these instructions carefully will help ensure the best possible outcomes from your treatment. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact our office.

Post-Operative Instructions: Scaling and Root Planing

  • Some discomfort and sensitivity is normal for a few days after the procedure
  • Avoid eating until the numbness wears off to prevent biting your cheek or tongue
  • Stick to soft foods for the first 24 hours
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water starting the day after your procedure
  • Continue brushing and flossing, but be gentle around treated areas
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication as needed

Post-Operative Instructions: Dental Implants

  • Apply ice to the outside of your face for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling
  • Do not disturb the surgical site - avoid touching, rinsing vigorously, or spitting
  • Take prescribed medications as directed
  • Eat soft foods and avoid the surgical site when chewing
  • Do not smoke, as this can significantly impair healing
  • Attend all follow-up appointments as scheduled

Post-Operative Instructions: Extractions

  • Bite down firmly on the gauze pad for 30-60 minutes after the procedure
  • Do not use straws, spit, or rinse vigorously for 24 hours to protect the blood clot
  • Apply ice packs to reduce swelling (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 72 hours
  • Take pain medication before the anesthesia wears off
  • Contact us immediately if you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, or fever

Post-Operative Instructions: Gum Grafting

  • Do not disturb the surgical site - avoid pulling on your lip to look at the graft
  • Apply ice packs to the outside of your face for the first 48 hours
  • Eat soft, cool foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth
  • Take all medications as prescribed, including antibiotics if given
  • Avoid brushing the surgical area until directed by your periodontist
  • Sleep with your head elevated to reduce swelling

Pre-Operative Instructions

  • Eat a light meal before your appointment unless otherwise instructed
  • Take any prescribed pre-medications as directed
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home if you will be sedated
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
  • Inform us of any changes to your health or medications
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before any surgical procedure
