Tooth Extractions

Sometimes tooth extractions are necessary if other measures cannot help to restore or save it.

When is Extraction Necessary?

Tooth extraction may be recommended when:

  • A tooth is too decayed or damaged to be saved
  • Advanced periodontal disease has affected the tooth's support
  • A tooth is cracked below the gum line
  • Teeth are crowded and need to be removed for orthodontic treatment
  • Wisdom teeth are impacted or causing problems

The Extraction Process

During an extraction, the area is numbed with local anesthesia. The tooth is then carefully loosened and removed. For more complex extractions, the tooth may need to be sectioned before removal.

How Long Does It Take to Heal?

Initial healing typically takes one to two weeks. The extraction site will form a blood clot that protects the bone and nerves underneath. It's important to follow post-operative instructions carefully to prevent dry socket and ensure proper healing.

What is Dry Socket?

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site becomes dislodged before healing is complete. This exposes the underlying bone and nerves, causing significant pain. Following post-operative care instructions, including avoiding straws and smoking, helps prevent this condition.
