How Long Does A Tooth Extraction Take?

Tooth extraction, or having a tooth removed, is sometimes necessary. A tooth may need to be extracted if it is too decayed or damaged to be saved. Teeth are sometimes extracted for orthodontic purposes, when there isn't enough room in the mouth for all of the teeth.

Simple Extraction

A simple extraction of a visible tooth typically takes only 20-40 minutes, including time for anesthesia to take effect. This type of extraction is used when the tooth is visible above the gum line and can be removed in one piece.

Surgical Extraction

A surgical extraction, which may be needed for impacted teeth or teeth that have broken at the gum line, takes longer—usually 45 minutes to an hour or more.

Factors Affecting Duration

  • Location of the tooth
  • Condition of the tooth
  • Root structure complexity
  • Number of teeth being extracted
